Crocodile..er, onion tears

I don't know about you guys but in our home, onions have been persona non grata for like, 2 months or so.

The sudden steep hike in their prices towards the latter part of last year meant that our Home-cum- Finance Minister decreed that we would do without the stupid bulbs, the most widely cultivated and consumed species in India of the genus Allium ie. the Onion! Or, Vengayam!, as our neighbours across our state would state with relish!

At its peak in December last year, its price p/kg hit the high 200/- mark. With every Rs. 10/- hike in the price, there were commensurate shrieks and moans heard in kitchens, inside homes and apartments and every time someone approached the onions section in markets and supermarkets.

Prices have cooled since then..its now at roughly 70% off that figure but the H&FM has still not lifted the embargo. Strangely, we've managed to live without it. No dish, including Biryanis, Raita's, etc have been affected by its absence! The rationale that Vegetarians have against it - that it excites you and makes you frisky, well, we wouldn't right now. 7 months later, if no of babies being delivered shows a sharp dip, we might have a correlation, as the statisticians say. Or it is causation? Never mind.

As a wag pointed out, if you enjoyed buying it when it was 20/- bucks or less, then you can't complain when its 10x that figure! Skewed logic but effective nevertheless, methinks!

So, please when you drop in our humble abode and you dont get onion pakoras with our first class coffee, kindly don't cry. Save all that water...summer is but a few months away!

Time, Precious Time

My favorite things in life don't cost any money. Its really clear the most precious resource we all have is TIME.  ~Steve Jobs~

Let me tell you guys a story, a short one.

Before the era of distracting social media, Whatsapp & FaceBook in particular, and before the age of smartphones in general,  we strove to connect to people face to face. Not 'online'! We had time to form relationships and forge friendships.

When I moved to Chennai on job shift around 2002, except for a few relatives, I had plenty of time and a new city to explore. After work, there was not much to do on the social scene. It was around the time that Blogging as a way to express your thoughts (and mostly feelings!) online was gaining popularity.

Writing came naturally to me and I deep dived into the new fad. Established my online space and then formed connections with local bloggers. Some of them started as 'online' connections around 'blogs' & 'bloggers', 'blogging' and eventually, it spilled over to meetings in real time and continued as friendships.

I am one of these lucky folks to still have bloggers who have turned friends, whom I can still call and we can talk and recollect the good times.

With a view to create new connections, I resume my blogging here and express my thoughts on the times that we live in. Drop by whenever you can, read up and stay in touch!

Cheers!

:)
